Never Anticipate the Command

Writer: Charles MooreCharles Moore

Good afternoon everyone,

I truly hope you’re doing well today. 52 years ago in 1973 I found myself at Paris Island, South Carolina Marine Corps base Boot Camp. We had been in Boot Camp for no more than three or four days and we were standing in formation at the position of attention, waiting for instructions from our drill instructor. Pretty soon he faced his platoon and gave the command “FORWARD”…. And that’s all he said. All of us brand new recruits just knew that he was going to say the word “march” but he did not. All of a sudden, half of the platoon had leaned forward in anticipation that he would say “march”, and because of it they lost their footing and some of them fell forward. The only thing the drill instructor had said was “forward”, but never gave the command to “march”. Immediately the drill instructor told the platoon these words, “never anticipate the command”.

As I think of this event of 52 years ago, I am reminded of Jesus who is Captain of our Salvation. We should always be in anticipation of the Lord speaking to us and giving us a command that we should follow, but we should never anticipate what the Lord is going to say or how the He is going to lead. It is for sure we would do something wrong if we move on our own. There is nothing wrong with anticipation, just don’t put the cart before the horse. God himself has an order of how things need to be, and we can depend on Him.

May God bless
